Rhodiola rosea, or Roseroot, is an adaptogenic herb that has a long history of use across Europe. It’s ability to grow in the tundra of northern Russia and Iceland lends to it’s ability to help humans adapt to stress. This hardy little plant, robust in nature, can be a saving grace for tired, burnt out moms and dads. Commonly paired with ginseng, this herb boosts energy without the shakiness of caffeine.
Recent studies have shown its ability to regulate thyroid function, balance white blood cell counts and protect the brain. It is of particular interest to me for its capacity to inhibit the decline of neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin. This makes it a perfect plant for helping to treat low mood and fatigue.
Rhodiola’s ability to thrive in the harsh winter climates, shows us it has the nature to heal the body in severe stress. Adapting to physical stressors is just as important as adapting to mental stressors. Athletes in training can use this herb to increase stamina and reduce recovery time.
